Our Story

Welcome to the Amherst German Christmas Market!

The Amherst German Christmas Market is an outdoor event held each December on the historic Amherst village green. Founded in 2019 by Amherst resident Lindsay Buchanan, it was the first European-inspired market of its kind in New Hampshire. In 2022 the organization was formally established as a 501c3 nonprofit, funded entirely through its own efforts, with proceeds supporting the event and local Amherst nonprofit organizations.

Each year the market fills the village green with the festive atmosphere visitors would expect from a Christmas market: handcrafted goods, specialty foods, unique gifts, and community spirit, with a distinctly European character woven throughout. Authentic German and European imports, traditional foods and drinks, and cultural entertainment set it apart from a typical American craft fair.

The market grew more authentic and ambitious with each passing year, drawing visitors from across New England and beyond while establishing itself as one of the most attended community events in southern New Hampshire. That growth was gratifying – and brought real growing pains. The organization is run by a small handful of local volunteers who give their free time wholeheartedly to make it all happen. Crowds consistently arrived beyond what was planned for, and external requirements and demands grew with each passing year, adding layers of complexity and cost. Yet each year, through challenges both visible and behind the scenes, the organization adapted and delivered.

European-inspired outdoor Christmas markets are now a growing presence across New Hampshire where very few, if any, were seen before. The Amherst German Christmas Market helped show it was possible.

Each year has been a stepping stone toward a larger vision. Stay connected to see what we’re planning next!
